The feed solution is pumped through a high-pressure pump to the membrane module (spiral-wound, hollow-fiber, or tubular membranes). Under cross-flow filtration: small molecules (water, salts, and small-molecule active ingredients) pass through the membrane to become the permeate; large molecules (proteins, colloids, and bacteria) are retained and recirculated back to the recirculation tank.
